'Fiesta'
Year: 1989
Size: 30 x 42
Medium: Oil, Collage on canvas
Town fiestas are a regular feature in Philippine culture. Inherited
from the Spanish rule as a means of spreading the faith, this religious
folk festival has evolved through generations in varied forms. The
artist attempts to encapsulate its appeal through a bird's eye view,
placing the religious procession and patron saint at center focus.
Although the original format was borrowed from other sources, the
artist innovates wlth an open-form composition, combining different
materials and playing spaces by interlocking shapes of rooftops
and street pavements with fiesta's buntings.
